Getting to UCLA
Flying to Los Angeles
The best airport to fly into is Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which is approximately 12 miles from UCLA; Burbank Airport (BUR) is about 20 miles away and is another option.
Getting to UCLA from LAX
A taxi is the easiest way to get from LAX to UCLA; the cost is about $36. There are also shared ride services (such as SuperShuttle) which are a bit cheaper, but you may have to wait for a shuttle to leave.
Here are directions for the cab/shuttle driver to DeNeve (student housing): "Take the 405 north to the Sunset Blvd. exit and go east on Sunset. Turn right onto Belagio and go to De Neve Drive."
For speakers staying at the Hilgard House, tell the cab driver to take you to the Hilgard House at 927 Hilgard Ave in Westwood.
It is also possible to get to UCLA by bus from LAX, though you will have to walk a decent bit to get from the bus stop to the student housing. If you are interested in this option, please email Russ and he will put together additional information.
Driving
Specific driving instructions can be found here under Campus Visitor > Directions.
UCLA Housing
Students will be housed at DeNeve Plaza on the UCLA campus; see here for more information. Check-in time on July 19 is 4 pm, and checkout time on August 1 is 11 am. The housing plan includes breakfast (served 7-9 AM) and dinner (5-8 PM). Recreational facilties are available at the Wooden Center; your housing key should be sufficient for entrance to the Wooden Center, but we would recommend confirming this when you check in if you are interested in using the facilities.
Here is a map that shows the route (red line) from De Neve Plaza (student housing location, highlighted in green) to the Faculty Center (conference location, highlighted in red).
Dining on and around campus
There are a number of places to eat on campus. In the Ackerman Union (highlighted in yellow in the map above) there are a number of restaurants on several levels. A full list of campus dining options can be found here. There are also many restaurants in Westwood Village, just south of campus; these are too far to walk for lunch but are good options for weekend dining.
If you are looking for restaurants either in Westwood or farther afield, a good resource is UrbanSpoon.com.
Weekend Fun
We hope that you will have some time to explore Los Angeles over the weekend, when you are not busy scanning. Fortunately, there is relatively good public transportation from the UCLA area to many local attractions. Here are a few things you might consider:
This is well worth a visit, both for the beautiful building and grounds and also for the great views of LA (if the air is clear). The Metro 761 Rapid bus goes from UCLA Ackerman Terminal to the Getty Center; schedules are available at www.metro.net.
Santa Monica Pier and 3rd Street Promenade
This is a picturesque and fun place to walk around, with lots of street performers on the Promenade.
A number of the Santa Monica Big Blue Buses travel from UCLA to the Pier and Promenade area; see here for more information.
The Venice Beach Boardwalk is famous for its bohemian characters and street performers. The Santa Monica Big Blue Bus #1 and #2 both go to Venice Beach from the Ackerman Terminal. If you enjoy walking, you might like to walk from the Santa Monica Pier down the beach boardwalk to Venice.
